Restore Boiler Room Windows & Roundhouse Windows
The Hanna Roundhouse Society is working towards finding funds to help with restoration of the 1913 Boiler Room/Machine Shop Annex on the 1913 CNoR Roundhouse. This part of the “Roundhouse” is where 3 Steam Boilers would provide steam to run equipment, heat this building, the roundhouse & the service pits, provide steam to power the exterior Turntable motor, etc. The Boilers were fed coal to heat water to create the steam & were switched out every 5 years for Recommissioning. I believe Boiler Makers kept watchful eye on the boilers to ensure the required water volume & temperature was maintained. Another worker, perhaps a Fireman, was to ensure the amount of coal to meet the steam demands, was met. Steam driven equipment was belt driven & was required for lathes, drill presses & many other types of equipment used by Machinists to repair/rebuild parts for the steam locomotives.
The roof to the Boiler Room/Machine Shop was about 3,500 ft2, but the floor space may have been slightly smaller. There were 4 long wooden windows along the north wall & 3 smaller wooden windows over the 3 Boiler Doors. The south wall sported 5 long wooden windows on the east side of this wall & 3 small wooden windows on the west end, over the Coal Bins along the SW end of the south wall.
The Hanna Roundhouse Society is working on a project to restore/rebuild all the wooden windows. However, securing a restoration carpenter which meets Heritage standards needs to be achieved before details to this project will be released. This project may give the public an opportunity to have a direct hand in restoring a portion of the Roundhouse, & would be in addition to the restoration work we are able complete with generous donations we receive.
There are 18 wooden Engine Door windows & 18 tall wooden exterior windows as well. And when they are done, 30 wooden transom windows could be rebuild/restored! This could be an ideal training opportunity for students wanting to learn how to restore wooden windows. Especially with all the windows we need to address. It would be a wonderful opportunity to have the work done at the Roundhouse where skills can be learned & the work can be done. Something we are also looking at.
This could be a long process, but, “You have to start somewhere!”
Hanna Roundhouse Society.
